Angelina Jolie (originally Angelina
Jolie Voight) is an American actress and director, popular for her sex appeal,
edginess and work in the field of humanitarian aid. She was awarded an Academy
Award for her supporting performance as a psychiatrist in Girl, Interrupted
(1999).Jolie, daughter of actor Jon Voight, spent much of her growing up in New
York before relocating to Los Angeles at age 11. After having attended the Lee
Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute two years ago, she later attended Beverly Hills
High School. Then, she pursued a degree in drama at New York University. In
addition to appearing in theatre productions, she played the role of a model as
well as appearing in music videos.Jolie's first film-related role was in
Hackers (1995) in the filming process, she became engaged to her first husband
British actor Jonny Lee Miller (married 1996 divorced in 1999). The film did
not find an audience, which was the case for a series of subsequent movies.
Jolie as the role of the Alabama's segregationist governor's wife and was the
focus of attention in 1997. In the following year, she received a Golden Globe
Award. She played the role of an actress who is struggling with addiction to
drugs in the HBO film Gia in 1999. The performance won her numerous accolades,
including an award of the Golden Globe Award and Screen Actors Guild Award. She
starred with John Cusack in Pushing Tin in 1999. In the following year, she
married Thornton (divorced in 2003). She played the role of the girlfriend of
carjackers (Nicolas Cage) in Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000) and later adopted the
British accent and mastered street fighting and kickboxing for the title roles
in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of
Life (2003). In 2004, she played the mother of Alexander the Great in Oliver
Stone's Alexander as well as starred alongside Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law in
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, a sci-fi thriller set in 1930s New York
City. Both films were disappointing in the box office, however Jolie's Mr.
& Mrs. Smith (2005) was an enormous success. Jolie played a character
acting as a normal householdwife as she worked on the film. Brad Pitt became
her partner in the film.
